Forestry Mulching in Jacksonville: What It Is and How It Differs From Traditional Clearing

A mulcher is a drum of carbide teeth on the front of a tracked machine. It grinds standing trees and brush to 8 inches, vegetation of every kind, palmetto crowns included, into a 2-to-4-inch layer of mulched material and leaves it as ground cover. Traditional clearing pushes everything into a burn pile with a dozer, scrapes the topsoil with it, and then hauls or burns. Mulching is how you eliminate the pile, the haul-off, the Florida Forest Service burn authorization and the bare sand. The root systems stay in the ground, so the lot does not wash in the first summer storm. What stays: stumps cut flush and ground over, mulch across the cleared areas. What a mulcher is not: a tree service for one laurel oak over the roof, or a demolition crew. Clearing-scale work only, and I say so on the walk-through.

What We Mulch Around Jacksonville: Palmetto, Gallberry, Wax Myrtle, Slash Pine and Vine

Saw palmetto is the job on most lots. Its root mat sits in the top 6 inches of flatwoods sand, and a rotary cutter just mows the fronds. We grind the crowns with the drum. Palmetto roots run deeper than most New Year's resolutions. Gallberry, wax myrtle, fetterbush and the understory and undergrowth under slash pine go in the same pass. Light brush, vine and sapling growth on an infill lot takes half a day. Volunteer pine to 8 inches and small trees go whole. Cut trees over that first with a saw, then the drum eats the tops. Live oaks the county protects stay; selective clearing around them runs $2,000 to 3,200 an acre on the hammock. Camphor and Chinese privet resprout from a mulched crown unless the crew treats the cut within minutes, so that is on the sheet too.

Overgrown Acreage Mulching in Clay, Nassau and Baker

Overgrown acreage runs $1,400 to 2,300 an acre on flatwoods, $1,100 to 1,700 on Trail Ridge scrub. Pasture reclaim, fence lines, fire breaks, trails and planted pine understory all fit the machine. Near Callahan in Nassau we cleared 12 acres of wax myrtle and volunteer pine off old pasture: 3 days on the dedicated 300-hp mulcher, $12,300 plus transport. On tracts under greenbelt classification the mulch keeps the ground in agricultural condition, and no burn pile means no neighbor calling the Florida Forest Service. The 300-hp machine can clear 3 to 5 acres a day on flatwoods, the skid steer about 1 to 2. Send me the acre count and what grows on it and I pick the machine.

Residential Mulching Services for Lots in Nocatee, Middleburg, Yulee and Palm Coast

A half-acre lot is one day, $2,700. A quarter-acre infill lot is $1,900 flat. On a half-acre Nocatee-area lot last spring we mulched the palmetto and wax myrtle around 3 live oaks the St. Johns County code protects, one day, $2,700. Backyards in Middleburg off CR 218, estate parcels in Yulee near Wildlight, and the ITT lots in Palm Coast all run on the same sheet; Palm Coast adds the city clearing permit, which needs a building permit first. Mulch stays off the driveway and out of the landscape beds. A house pad still needs the stumps grubbed and 12 inches of compacted fill, quoted per pad. What to Do After Mulching on Flatwoods Sand

Leave the mulch alone for a season. The 2-to-4-inch layer holds the sand through the summer rain and breaks down into topsoil by the second year. You can drive a truck across it the same afternoon; a rut only shows up where the hardpan is shallow and the ground was wet. Palmetto resprouts from any crown the drum missed, so I run the machine a second time over thick mat before we leave. Camphor and privet get each cut treated. If a pad or driveway goes on the cleared ground, the stumps under it still come out with the root rake, $165 an hour, and single stumps in a yard get stump grinding at $4.25 an inch. Cleanup is already done when the trailer leaves; that is the point of the method. Walk the lot with me in a month if anything came back.

Permits for Mulching in Northeast Florida

Mulching palmetto and underbrush alone usually needs no permit. Three things change that. First, protected trees: City of Jacksonville Chapter 656 Part 12 wants a tree removal permit at 11.5 inches DBH on residential lots in Duval County; St. Johns County, Clay County and Nassau County codes protect oaks at 8 inches; Palm Coast allows no clearing without a building permit. I pull the Chapter 656 permit for you, fee at cost. Second, water: the SJRWMD Environmental Resource Permit is triggered by fill or drainage changes, not by mulching, but a cypress dome or bayhead gets delineated and stays out of the footprint. Third, FWC gopher tortoise: survey within 90 days, no work within 25 feet of a burrow, relocation permit before clearing if burrows are found. On a lot off CR 218 we flagged two burrows and mulched around them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mulching in Jacksonville

How much should I pay for forestry mulching in Jacksonville?

$2,700 a day for a skid steer mulcher with transport included, or $1,400 to 2,300 an acre on palmetto and pine flatwoods. Scrub runs $1,100 to 1,700 an acre. A half-acre lot is one day. Anyone quoting far under that is mowing with a brush cutter, not grinding the root crowns.

What is the hourly rate for a mulcher?

I price by the day, not the hour: $2,700 for the skid steer, $4,100 plus transport for the 300-hp machine. An hourly rate on flatwoods punishes you for every stuck track and fuel stop. By the day you know the number before the trailer leaves Middleburg.

What are the downsides of mulching?

Three. The mulch layer is not a finished pad, so a house site still needs grubbing and fill. Camphor and privet resprout unless the cut stumps are treated. And stems over 8 inches have to be cut first on the skid steer. For a yard, a trail or a lot you want to hold, none of those matter.

Can I drive over the mulched area?

Yes, the same day. A pickup or a trailer rides on the mulch layer without sinking. The exception is wet flatwoods in July, where the hardpan is 12 inches down and anything heavy cuts a rut. Wait a dry week, or keep to the high side of the lot.

How fast can you mulch an acre?

Half a day to a full day on the skid steer for palmetto and pine flatwoods, depending on density. The 300-hp mulcher does 3 to 5 acres a day. Trail Ridge scrub goes faster than a solid palmetto mat under 40-year slash pine.

Do you have a service minimum?

One day on the skid steer, $2,700, or $1,900 flat for a quarter-acre infill lot. I do not send a trailer for an hour. Call (904) 406-7990 or pick a walk-through slot on the calendar, and I confirm by text the same evening.
