What We Mulch and Clear in Baker County

Slash pine plantation and natural flatwoods with a palmetto and gallberry understory, wax myrtle on old fields, grape vine and titi along the wet edges. Standing trees to 8 inches go down in one pass; the longleaf you want kept stays, and so does any hammock oak on the St. Marys. Toward Trail Ridge and the Osceola the ground turns to longleaf and wiregrass sandhill on sugar sand, which mulches fast. Small trees and sapling pine are the easy part. Palmetto root systems are the slow part: the drum shreds the mat a rotary cutter only combs. Out here the GPS says Okefenokee before it says anything useful.

Acreage and Pasture Mulching Around Macclenny, FL

Overgrown acreage at Sanderson, Taylor and along CR 125 is cutover pine nobody replanted, gone to volunteer pine and myrtle. We clear land like that at an acre a day with the skid steer in thick palmetto, two in light brush, three to four acres a day with the 300-hp machine. Fire breaks and fence lines come first on a timber tract. On our jobs in Baker the bay edges get flagged before the machine unloads; a mulcher floats on wet flatwoods where a dozer sinks to the hardpan.

Residential Mulching Services: Lots and Backyards, Not a Tree Service

A half-acre lot is one day, $2,700; a quarter-acre lot in Macclenny or Glen St. Mary is $1,900 flat. Backyards in town went to privet, vine and sapling pine against the fence; the heavy-duty head fits a 10-foot gate, and we cut trees it cannot swallow. Trees and brush become a 2 to 4 inch layer of mulched material around the landscape beds. We are not a tree service and do no tree removal over a roof. I know people who do.

Forestry Mulching Cost in Baker County: Mulch by the Day or the Acre

Slash pine and palmetto flatwoods mulch at $1,400 to 2,300 an acre by density. Longleaf sandhill on Trail Ridge runs $1,100 to 1,700. Hardwood hammock on the St. Marys, oaks kept, is selective clearing at $2,000 to 3,200. The wet-season day on flatwoods, June to September, goes in the written price first. No surprises on the invoice.

  • Skid steer mulcher: $2,700 a day, transport included Macclenny to Olustee.
  • 300-hp mulcher: $4,100 a day plus transport, stems to 12 inches; past 5 acres it is cheaper per acre.
  • Haul-off when you want it gone: $650 to 1,200 per 10-yard load; a Florida Forest Service burn authorization is the cheaper option on some tracts out here.

After Mulching: Drive It, Grind It Twice, or Grade a Pad

You are left with 2 to 4 inches of chipped pine and palmetto as ground cover, drivable the same day without a rut. Topsoil stays put instead of blowing off bare sand. Palmetto resprouts from any crown the drum missed, so I grind the thick patches again the next dry season. Cleared areas meant for a house pad still need the root rake at $165 an hour, then 12 inches of compacted fill above crown of road and three roller passes. Cleared ground meant for pasture gets the material raked and disked in.

Permits, Tortoises and Wetlands Before Mulching or Land Clearing in Baker County

Mulching vegetation needs no county permit by itself; the Baker County Land Development Regulations tie clearing to a building permit or bona fide agriculture, and there is no stand-alone tree ordinance outside Macclenny city limits. Timber under greenbelt classification follows silviculture BMPs. The SJRWMD Environmental Resource Permit is triggered by fill and drainage changes, not mulching, and west of Olustee the SRWMD takes over. FWC gopher tortoise rules apply on Trail Ridge: survey within 90 days, no work within 25 feet of a burrow. Red-cockaded woodpecker cavity trees in the Osceola longleaf stay. Eagle nests on Ocean Pond carry a 660-foot buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mulching Services

How much does mulching cost per acre out here?

Between $1,400 and 2,300 an acre on slash pine and palmetto, $1,100 to 1,700 on longleaf sandhill. By the day, $2,700 for the skid steer and $4,100 plus transport for the 300-hp machine. Past 5 acres the big machine is cheaper per acre, and density sets the rest.

What makes mulching different from traditional clearing?

Traditional clearing pushes everything into a dozer pile and then burns or hauls it. Mulching grinds trees and brush in place and leaves the material as cover: no burn pile, no bare sand. Baker is the one county where a burn still sometimes pencils out, and land clearing in Baker County can go either way.

Will mulching kill palmetto and underbrush permanently?

No. Palmetto resprouts from the crown, and a 3-inch mulch layer only slows it. A second pass the next dry season takes most of it; undergrowth like gallberry comes back thin. To eliminate the mat for good, the root rake has to pull it.

Can I drive on the mulched ground?

Same day, yes. A 2 to 4 inch layer of mulched material carries a pickup without a rut and a log truck after a dry week. For a driveway or pad the layer is raked off first. Mulching leaves a lot walkable and clear, not buildable.

Does the service cover commercial tracts and the rest of North Florida?

Yes. Commercial sites at the I-10 exits get the same crew as a backyard in Glen St. Mary. We work the whole metro, Baker County FL east to Nassau and Duval, and refer out demolition and stump grinding. Cleanup is included, and the 2026 dry season is already on the calendar.
