What We Mulch and Clear From Ponte Vedra to Hastings
Wet and mesic flatwoods: palmetto, gallberry, wax myrtle and fetterbush under slash pine, grape vine through the understory. That is the ground under SilverLeaf, RiverTown and Shearwater, and most of the tracts off CR 210 and SR 16. Standing trees to 8 inches go down in one pass. Live oaks over 8 inches are protected by the county, so they stay, and the drum works around the root systems. Small trees and sapling pine mulch in seconds. On the Guana ridge the mix turns to scrub oak and sand pine on sugar sand, which mulches faster. Palmetto does not negotiate. Neither does the drum.
Acreage and Pasture Mulching Around St. Augustine, FL
Overgrown acreage on SR 207 near Hastings and Elkton is old potato-field flatwoods gone to wax myrtle and volunteer pine. We clear land like that at an acre a day in thick growth, two in light brush. Fire breaks and fence lines first, then the interior. On our jobs in this county the wet corners get flagged before the trailer gate drops, because a mulcher floats on wet flatwoods and a dozer sinks to the hardpan. Twelve Mile Swamp edges stay out of the footprint.
Residential Mulching Services: Lots and Backyards, Not a Tree Service
A half-acre lot is one day, $2,700. A Nocatee-area lot came in at exactly that, with 3 live oaks kept under the county ordinance. Backyards in Fruit Cove and Julington Creek went to privet, vine and sapling laurel oak; the heavy-duty head fits a 10-foot gate, and we cut trees it cannot swallow. Trees and brush become a 2 to 4 inch layer of mulched material around the landscape beds. Tree removal over a roof is a tree service job, not ours. I know people who do.
Forestry Mulching Cost in St. Johns County: Mulch by the Day or the Acre
Palmetto and pine flatwoods mulch at $1,400 to 2,300 an acre by density. Coastal scrub on the Guana ridge runs $1,100 to 1,700. Live oak hammock near the Matanzas or along the St. Johns River, oaks kept, is selective clearing at $2,000 to 3,200. The wet-season day on flatwoods, June to September, goes in the written price first. Measure twice.
- Skid steer mulcher, $2,700 a day, transport included from Ponte Vedra to Hastings.
- 300-hp mulcher, $4,100 a day plus transport, for stems to 12 inches and tracts past 5 acres.
- Haul-off if you want the material gone: $650 to 1,200 per 10-yard load.

After Mulching: Drive It, Grind It Twice, or Grade a Pad
You get 2 to 4 inches of chipped pine and palmetto as ground cover. Drive on it the same day; a pickup leaves no rut. Topsoil stays where it was, and on flatwoods sand that is the point. Palmetto resprouts from any crown the drum missed, so I grind the thick patches a second time the next dry season. Cleared areas meant for a house pad still need the root rake at $165 an hour, then 12 inches of compacted fill above crown of road. Cleared ground meant for sod gets the material raked into strips.
Permits, Tortoises and Wetlands Before Mulching or Land Clearing in St. Johns County
Mulching vegetation needs no county permit by itself. Taking down a protected tree does: St. Johns County Land Development Code, Article IV, 8 inches DBH and specimen live oaks, with mitigation. Inside SilverLeaf, RiverTown and Shearwater the CDD review sits on top. The SJRWMD Environmental Resource Permit is triggered by fill and drainage changes, not mulching; a dry lot needs nothing from the district. FWC gopher tortoise rules run the coastal ridge and the CR 210 scrub: survey within 90 days, no work within 25 feet of a burrow. Eagle nests on Guana and Julington Creek carry a 660-foot buffer. Flags and oak tags go on at the walk-through.
Where Our Insured Forestry Mulching Service Works in St. Johns County
St. Augustine, Nocatee, Ponte Vedra, World Golf Village, Julington Creek, Fruit Cove, Hastings and Elkton. The service area covers the St. Johns County area and the rest of Northeast Florida, Duval, Clay, Nassau and Baker, transport included. NS Mayport is 15 miles north of Ponte Vedra; I ran equipment there. Most of my calls still come from a (904) number.
Frequently Asked Questions About Mulching Services
How much does mulching cost per acre near St. Augustine?
Between $1,400 and 2,300 an acre on palmetto flatwoods, $1,100 to 1,700 on the coastal scrub. By the day, $2,700 for the skid steer and $4,100 plus transport for the 300-hp machine. A half-acre lot is one day, and density sets the rest.
How is mulching different from traditional clearing with a dozer?
Traditional clearing pushes everything into a pile with a dozer and then burns or hauls it. Mulching grinds trees and brush in place and leaves the material as cover, so there is no burn pile and no bare sand. Land clearing in St. Johns County with a dozer still fits when a pad is coming.
Will mulching kill palmetto and underbrush for good?
No. Palmetto resprouts from the crown; a 3-inch mulch layer slows it and a second pass the next dry season takes most of it. Undergrowth like gallberry comes back thin. To eliminate the mat entirely, the root rake has to pull it, and that is a different price.
Can I drive on the mulched area right away?
Yes. A 2 to 4 inch layer of mulched material carries a pickup without a rut the same day and a concrete truck after a dry week. For a driveway or pad the layer is raked off first. Mulching leaves the lot walkable and clear, not buildable.
Do you mulch commercial sites and the rest of North Florida?
Yes. Commercial sites along CR 210 and US 1 get the same crew as a backyard in Fruit Cove. We work the whole metro, St. Johns County FL to Nassau and Clay, and we refer out demolition and stump grinding. Cleanup is included, and the 2026 dry season is already on the calendar.
