What We Mulch and Clear in Duval County
Saw palmetto under slash pine is 80 percent of the mulching here. The Westside, Northside and Oceanway lots are flatwoods: palmetto, gallberry, wax myrtle, grape vine through the understory. Standing trees to 8 inches go down in one pass; live oaks stay, because the city protects them. Small trees, sapling pine, camphor and privet on infill lots mulch in minutes; camphor gets a cut-surface treatment or it comes back. Palmetto root systems are the real job: the drum shreds the mat a rotary cutter only trims.
Acreage and Pasture Mulching Around Jacksonville, FL
Overgrown acreage on the Northside and out toward Baldwin runs 1 to 10 acres of flatwoods untouched since the last timber cut. We clear land like that at an acre a day in thick palmetto, two in light brush. Fire breaks and fence lines first, then we clear the interior. On our jobs in Duval the wet corners get flagged before the machine unloads: a mulcher floats on wet flatwoods, a dozer sinks to the hardpan. Trail Ridge sandhill mulches faster and cheaper.
Residential Mulching Services: Lots and Backyards, Not a Tree Service
A half-acre lot is one day, $2,700; a quarter-acre infill lot is $1,900 flat. Backyards in Mandarin and Argyle went wild: privet, vine, sapling laurel oak, palmetto against the fence. The heavy-duty head fits a 10-foot gate and we cut trees it cannot swallow. Trees and brush become a 2 to 4 inch layer of mulched material around your landscape beds. We are not a tree service and do no tree removal over a roof. I know people who do.
Forestry Mulching Cost in Duval County: Mulch by the Day or the Acre
Palmetto and pine flatwoods mulch at $1,400 to 2,300 an acre by density. Sandhill runs $1,100 to 1,700. Live oak hammock along the St. Johns River, oaks kept, is selective clearing at $2,000 to 3,200. The wet-season day on flatwoods, June to September, is written in first. No surprises on the invoice.
- Skid steer mulcher: $2,700 a day, transport included across Duval.
- Dedicated 300-hp mulcher: $4,100 a day plus transport, stems to 12 inches.
- Haul-off, if you want it gone: $650 to 1,200 a 10-yard load.

After Mulching: Drive It, Grind It Twice, or Grade a Pad
The mulch layer is 2 to 4 inches of chipped wood and palmetto, ground cover you can drive on the same day; a pickup leaves no rut. Topsoil stays put, which matters on sand that blows when bare. Palmetto resprouts from any crown the drum missed, so I grind the thick patches twice. Cleared areas meant for a pad still need the root rake, $165 an hour; a house does not sit on mulch. Cleared ground meant for grass gets the material raked into strips.
Permits, Tortoises and Wetlands Before Mulching or Land Clearing in Jacksonville
Mulching vegetation needs no City of Jacksonville permit. Taking down a protected tree does: Chapter 656 Part 12, 6 inches DBH on commercial sites, 11.5 on residential. I pull it, fee at cost. The SJRWMD Environmental Resource Permit is triggered by fill and drainage changes, not mulching; a dry lot needs nothing from the district. FWC gopher tortoise rules apply on every sandy lot: survey within 90 days, no work within 25 feet of a burrow. Cypress domes stay out of the footprint. Flags go in on the walk-through.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mulching Services
How much does mulching cost per acre here?
Between $1,400 and 2,300 an acre on palmetto and pine flatwoods, $1,100 to 1,700 on Trail Ridge sandhill. By the day, $2,700 for the skid steer, $4,100 plus transport for the 300-hp machine. Density sets the number.
How is mulching different from traditional clearing?
Traditional clearing pushes everything into a pile with a dozer, then burns or hauls it. Mulching grinds trees and brush where they stand and leaves the material as cover. No burn pile, no bare sand. Land clearing in Jacksonville with a dozer still fits when the plan calls for a pad.
Will mulching kill the palmetto and underbrush permanently?
No. Palmetto resprouts from the crown; the mulch layer slows it, nothing more. A second pass the next dry season takes most of it. Undergrowth like gallberry comes back thin under a 3-inch layer. To eliminate it for good, the root rake takes the mat out.
Can I drive on the mulched area?
Same day, yes. A 2 to 4 inch layer of mulched material carries a pickup without a rut, and a concrete truck after a dry week. For a driveway or pad the layer gets raked off first. Mulching leaves a lot walkable, not buildable.
Does the service cover commercial sites and the whole North Florida area?
Yes. Commercial sites in Cecil and along SR 9B get the same crew as a backyard in Mandarin. We work across Northeast Florida, Jacksonville FL to St. Augustine, Middleburg and Callahan. Demolition and stump grinding we refer out. Cleanup is included, and the 2026 dry season is on the calendar now.
